ABOUT ABOUT

You are cordially invited to join us at John Desotelle Studio for a one-time guest-workshop with Professor Nancy Tittler, PhD. Dr. Tittler will conduct a discussion on Anton Pavlovich Chekhov's language, the cultural context in which he wrote, and the question of retaining the integrity of the text in translation.

Can one translate the soul of the text without the context of its origins?
How does one approach a character whose words are not their own?

The four major works will be discussed (Uncle Vanya, Cherry Orchard, Three Sisters, And Seagull), as well as several one-acts, and a scene will be read in the original Russian, with the chance for those in attendance to try the language out for themselves.

There will be a small reception afterwards, with Russian fare mentioned in the text of Chekhov's plays, and all are welcome to partake.

When: Friday, March 6th, at 7pm
Where:  John Desotelle Studio
300 west 43d st, and 8th Ave, 3rd floor
